Dhaka, 18 Feb —Despite being rated as giants in ODI cricket, Bangladesh’s recent performance in this format was dismal one as they head into ICC Champions Trophy with an aim to become champions.
Captain Najmul Hossain Shanto made this bold statement while leaving the country for the
tournament but the stat suggested that Bangladesh lost more matches than winning in this format since the 2023 ODI World Cup in India.
In this period, Bangladesh have played 12 matches and won only four. Apart from their 2-1 win
over Sri Lanka at home, the Tigers lost their other three bilateral series. Back in December 2024, Bangladesh lost 0-3 on their tour of the West Indies, which was their last ODI fixture.
To add agony, Bangladesh lost the lone practice game against Pakistan Shaheens by seven wickets ahead of the Champions Trophy.
But last time when the Champions Trophy was held in England in 2017, Bangladesh moved to the
semifinal, which still remains their best result in any ICC tournament.
Bangladesh will kick off their campaign in the ICC Champions Trophy with the Group A match
against India in Dubai on February 20. They thereafter will take on New Zealand and Pakistan on February 24 and 27 respectively in Rawalpindi.
