Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chief Mohsin Naqvi has been elected as the new chairman of the Asian Cricket Council (ACC), succeeding Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) president Shammi Silva. The announcement was made after a virtual Annual General Meeting (AGM) of ACC member nations on Thursday.

Naqvi will serve a two-year term, taking on the role immediately. In a statement, the ACC confirmed, "Pakistan will lead the Council in its mission to promote and expand cricket across the Asian continent."

In his first remarks as ACC chairman, Naqvi expressed his gratitude and outlined his vision for the future of the sport. “Asia remains the heartbeat of world cricket, and I am committed to collaborating with all member boards to accelerate the game’s growth and global influence," he said.

Naqvi also thanked the outgoing leadership, particularly Shammi Silva, and emphasized the importance of continued regional cooperation.

His appointment comes at a pivotal moment as preparations for the upcoming Asia Cup, scheduled for September, are already underway. Although the tournament was originally set to be hosted by India, diplomatic challenges between India and Pakistan regarding cross-border team travel have led to a decision to hold the event at a neutral venue.

The UAE is widely considered the frontrunner to host the tournament, though Sri Lanka remains a strong contender. Finalizing the host country will be one of Naqvi’s first major tasks, especially after commercial rights for the event were recently secured.

A decision on the host venue is expected soon, and Naqvi's leadership will be crucial in navigating these logistics and ensuring the smooth conduct of the Asia Cup.
