Veteran Bollywood Actor Manoj Kumar Dies at 87

Manoj Kumar, the celebrated Bollywood actor renowned for his iconic patriotic roles in films such as Purab Aur Paschim and Kranti, passed away at the age of 87 in Mumbai. He died at 3:30 AM on Friday at Kokilaben Dhirubai Ambani Hospital due to heart complications, with decompensated liver cirrhosis listed as a secondary cause, according to hospital records.


Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences on social media, describing Kumar as a "legendary actor and filmmaker" whose work instilled national pride. Modi shared two photos with the late actor, writing, "He was an icon of Indian cinema, particularly remembered for his patriotic spirit. His work will continue to inspire generations. My thoughts are with his family and fans."

In an interview with ANI, Kumar’s son, Kunal Goswami, shared that his father had been battling health issues for some time, adding, "It is by God's grace that he left peacefully. He was happy, just a little unwell."

Born Harikrishnan Goswami in 1937 in Abbottabad (now in Pakistan), Manoj Kumar made his Bollywood debut in 1957 with Fashion and gained fame in 1961 with Kanch Ki Gudiya. His breakthrough came in 1965 with the thriller Gumnaam and the patriotic film Shaheed.

Kumar earned the nickname 'Bharat Kumar' for his portrayal of nationalistic heroes in films like Upkaar (1967), Purab Aur Paschim (1970), and Kranti (1981). He also directed and starred in Shor (1972) and won the Filmfare Award for Best Director in 1975 for Roti Kapada Aur Makaan.

He was honored with the Padma Shri in 1992, the Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award in 1999, and the Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 2015. In 2004, Kumar also joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

Manoj Kumar’s legacy as a cinematic icon endures through his memorable performances, and he will be remembered as a beloved figure in Indian cinema. Condolences to his family and fans. Om Shanti.
