The prime accused in the murder of seven-year-old Ramisa Akter in Dhaka's Pallabi area has confessed to the killing before a Dhaka court on Tuesday.

Sohel Rana gave a confessional statement after being produced before the court, while his wife, Swapna Khatun, was sent to jail custody in connection with the case, according to court officials.

Earlier in the day, investigating officer and Pallabi Police Station Sub-Inspector Wahiduzzaman appealed to the court to record Rana's statement after he reportedly agreed to give it voluntarily. In a separate plea, the officer sought jail custody for Swapna.

Following the hearing, Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Aminul Islam recorded Rana's statement and ordered that he be sent to jail. In a separate order, Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md Ashraful Haque directed that Swapna also be sent to jail custody.

According to investigators, the incident took place inside a flat in Pallabi Section 11 on Monday. Ramisa's family lived in a neighbouring apartment in the same building.

Police launched an extensive search operation after the incident and later arrested Rana from Fatullah in Narayanganj. Swapna had earlier been detained from the scene.

Law enforcement officials said initial findings suggest the child was assaulted and later killed inside the suspects' apartment. Investigators also alleged that attempts were made to conceal evidence after the crime.

The case came to light when Ramisa's mother, while searching for her daughter before school, noticed one of the child's shoes outside the suspects' apartment and became suspicious.

As local residents gathered and attempted to enter the flat, Rana allegedly escaped through a window before police arrived.

Investigators said evidence collected from the scene has been sent to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) for forensic examination to determine the full circumstances surrounding the incident.

Police records also show that Rana is accused in another case filed under the Anti-Terrorism Act in Natore.
