Bangladesh Bank (BB) is set to launch the 'Bangla QR' (Quick Response) code system on July 1, aiming to simplify, standardize and expand digital transactions across the country as part of its broader push toward a cashless economy.

The central bank believes the initiative will transform the country's payment ecosystem by creating a unified, low-cost and inclusive digital transaction platform that can be used by businesses of all sizes, from major shopping malls to roadside vendors.

Under the new system, merchants will be able to accept payments through a single QR code, eliminating the need for multiple QR codes issued by different financial institutions.

The move is expected to make digital transactions more convenient, transparent and accessible.

Officials said Bangla QR offers a significant technological advantage over conventional card-based payment systems, which require costly Point of Sale (POS) machines.

Instead, merchants only need a simple QR code sticker to receive payments, making the system particularly attractive for small businesses, street vendors and service providers.

The system is also expected to enhance transaction security by allowing payments to be completed directly through customers' bank or mobile financial service (MFS) applications, reducing risks associated with card cloning, PIN theft and other forms of payment fraud.

To oversee the nationwide rollout and expansion of the platform, Bangladesh Bank has formed a steering committee headed by Governor Md Mostaqur Rahman.

Representatives from relevant government ministries, commercial banks and MFS providers have been included in the committee.

Speaking about the initiative, Mostaqur Rahman said that wider adoption of digital transactions would reduce cash-management costs, enhance financial transparency and improve access to financial services.

"Bangla QR can play a significant role in delivering technology-based financial services to rural and underserved communities," he said.

Md Robiul Islam, Additional Managing Director of SBAC Bank PLC, welcomed the initiative, saying the global economy is steadily moving toward cashless transactions.

"This initiative will help align Bangladesh with international best practices and provide greater convenience for both consumers and merchants," he told BSS.

Prof Dr Md Shahidul Islam Zahid, Chairman of the Department of Banking and Insurance at Dhaka University, described Bangla QR as a landmark initiative for ensuring transparency and accountability in financial transactions.

However, he stressed the need for extensive awareness campaigns through mass and social media to maximize public participation.

"Limited financial literacy remains a challenge, and people must be educated about the benefits and proper use of the system," he said.

Merchants have also expressed optimism about the new platform.

Rahmat Ullah, a cloth trader at New Market in the capital, said the unified QR system would eliminate the inconvenience of maintaining multiple payment codes from different service providers.

Academic experts also emphasized the importance of cybersecurity and public awareness.

Prof Al Amin of Dhaka University's Accounting Department underscored the need for robust safeguards against digital fraud and cyber threats while ensuring users understand the simple payment process.

Prof Dr Morshed Hasan Khan of the university's Marketing Department said the initiative represents another important step toward modernizing Bangladesh's financial sector and improving the ease of doing business.

He noted that a wider shift toward cashless transactions would strengthen security for traders and contribute to the country's broader digital transformation agenda.

The nationwide launch of Bangla QR is expected to accelerate digital payment adoption and support Bangladesh's vision of building a more efficient, inclusive and technology-driven financial ecosystem, reports BSS.
