A man was beaten to death following a dispute allegedly over a goat eating tree leaves in Ishwardi upazila of Pabna on Sunday.

The deceased was identified as Mahabul Hossain, 60, son of late Azizul Pramanik of Sahapur Purbapara area under Sahapur Union.

Police detained Abul Bashar Munshi, son of Abul Kashem Munshi of the same area in connection with the murder, said Md Asadur Rahman, officer-in-charge (OC) of Ishwardi Police Station.

Witnesses said an argument broke out between Mahabul and his neighbours, Bashar Munshi and his elder brother Taslim Munshi, after one of Mahabul’s goats ate leaves from a tree around 11:30am.

At one stage, Bashar and Taslim beat Mahabul with sticks, leaving him injured, they said.

Locals and relatives rescued Mahabul and took him to Ishwardi Upazila Health Complex where doctors declared him dead, reports UNB.

OC Asadur Rahman said additional police are deployed in the area as tensions escalated after the death and efforts are underway to arrest the other accused.
