Detectives of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police have arrested four people in connection with the murder of a local Bangladesh Nationalist Party leader in the capital’s Adabar area and recovered the weapon allegedly used in the killing.

The arrestees were identified as Ripon, 27, Nirab, 25, Majnu Mia, 60, and Md Mizanur Rahman, 40.

They were arrested during a raid in Sahebnagar under Ishwarganj at around 9:20pm on Thursday, according to the DB Tejgaon Division.

According to police, the incident occurred around 8:30pm on Wednesday at the four-road intersection of Nobodoy Housing under Adabar Police Station, where a clash broke out between two groups over a previous dispute.

During the altercation, Md Abul Bashar, 45, general secretary of the Nobodoy Housing unit BNP, and Md Saddam Hossain, 35, were critically injured in an attack with sharp weapons.

Both were initially taken to Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital and later shifted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where Abul Bashar died around 11:30pm while undergoing treatment. Saddam remains under treatment.

Detectives identified the suspects through CCTV footage, intelligence inputs and technological surveillance before conducting the raid in Mymensingh.

During the operation, police recovered a switchgear knife believed to have been used in the killing.

During preliminary interrogation, the suspects told investigators the dispute began on Monday night during a gathering to watch the FIFA World Cup match between Brazil and Japan. An argument reportedly broke out over cheering and blowing whistles.

The conflict later escalated, and during a local arbitration meeting near D-Block Road No. 1 adjacent to Nobodoy Kacha Bazar on Wednesday night, another clash erupted, leaving Abul Bashar and Saddam seriously injured.

Legal proceedings against the accused are underway.
