Dhaka, Aug 23 - A Dhaka court yesterday framed charges against expelled Jubo Mohila League leader Shamima Nur Papia, her husband Mofizur Rahman Sumon and their two aides in a case filed against them on the charge of possessing fake currencies.

The two aides are Sabbir Khondaker and Sheikh Taiyaba Nur. Papia, Sumon, Sabbir and Taiyaba, are presently behind the bar. They pleaded not guilty and demanded justice after Dhaka’s Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Md Hasibul Haque read out the charges to them. They were brought to court on the occasion.

The court also fixed October 13 to start the trial of the case.

On February 22, last year, a team of RAB-1 arrested Papia, former Chhatra League leader Sumon and their two accomplices from Dhaka’s Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport when they were trying to leave the country.

In a raid, the Rab forces recovered seven passports, Tk 2,12,270, fake notes of Tk 25,600, US$ 11,481, Sri Lankan Rupee 420, Indian Rupee 301 and two debit cards from their possessions.

Later, RAB members raided Papia’s Farmgate flat and recovered a foreign-made pistol, two magazines, 20 rounds of bullets, five bottles of foreign liquor, Tk 58,41,000 and credit and debit cards of different banks during a drive.

Later, three cases were lodged, two with Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station under the Arms and the Special Powers Acts on February 24, and another one with Biman Bandar Police Station under the Special Powers Act and the Penal Code on February 23.

Police on December 2, last year submitted the charge sheet of the case to the court against the four in the case filed with Biman Bandar Police Station for possessing fake currencies.

The couple was sentenced to 27 years’ rigorous imprisonment in an arms case on October 12 last year.
