25-year-old man arrested over Dhanmondi rape incident

Dhaka, Jul 7 – A 25-year-old man was arrested in a case filed over the rape of a woman in Dhaka’s Dhanmondi.

The accused Mahadi Hasan Jarif was arrested by Dhanmondi Police from Barishal city’s Jordan Road area yesterday.

Officer-in-Charge of Dhanmondi Police Station Parvez Islam said the accused was arrested from his stepfather's house in Barishal and was brought to Dhaka.

After primary interrogation, Jarif was sent to the CMM court.

OC Parvez said Jarif used to live at his uncle's house in Kalyanpur.

“He has a circle of friends in the Dhanmondi Lake area where he used to roam around. He admitted to developing relationships with the various girls who used to come to the lake,” said the police official.

Citing Jarif’s statement during the primary interrogation, the OC said the victim came to Dhanmondi Lake after coming out of her house over a family problem.

“Jarif targeted the girl while she was sitting on a bench. He lured the victim into a trap of words and took her to the seventh floor of a commercial building at Dhanmondi where he raped her,” added the official.

After the incident, he fled to Barishal, the OC said. - UNB
