At least eight policemen were injured in a violent clash with a mob of attackers attempting to free a Chhatra Dal leader arrested in connection with the hacking of a prominent businessman. The assault took place early Friday morning, 24 January, outside New Market Police Station, where Mohammad Hossain, also known as Mithun, 35, was being held.

According to New Market Police Station's Officer-in-Charge, Mohsin Uddin Atik, the attackers were reportedly supporters of Mithun, who was arrested a day earlier in connection with the 10 January attack on Ehteshamil Haque, Senior Joint General Secretary of the Multiplan Shop Owners Association.

The attackers blocked the police convoy as it arrived at the station, and when asked to disperse, they launched a violent assault on the officers. Armed with sticks, iron rods, and machetes, the attackers tried to forcibly free Mithun from the police's custody. The injured officers included Tariq Latif, Assistant Commissioner of New Market Zone, and several others, including Sub-Inspectors Arab Ali, Firoz Ahmed, and Khandaker Mesbah.

"Mithun's supporters tried to snatch him from the police, but their attempt was foiled," OC Atik told The Business Standard. "We’ve filed a case, and six individuals involved in the attack have been arrested." The arrested suspects, identified as Bashir Islam, 28, Mohammad Hasan, 21, Mohammad Emon, 25, Masum Mahmud, 32, Mohammad Alamin, 30, and Akbar Ali, are currently in police custody.

The police report reveals that Mithun, who allegedly has ties to a criminal group known as "Emon Group," is suspected of being involved in multiple extortion activities targeting businessmen, particularly in the Dhanmondi area. Investigators suggest Mithun was working with the group's leader, Sanjidul Hasan Emon, and had used his position within the Chhatra Dal to exert influence.

Mithun’s arrest on Thursday night came after one of the arrested individuals in the hacking case implicated him in the attack on Haque. Mithun was taken to New Market Police Station early Friday morning around 4:00 am, but as the police convoy approached the station, supporters surrounded the vehicle and began their violent assault.

A case has been filed regarding the attack, and the police are continuing their investigation. While authorities have yet to pinpoint the mastermind behind the assault, OC Atik stated that the investigation will determine who ordered the attack on the police officers.

"We are taking this matter seriously and will continue to pursue those responsible," Atik added. "The investigation officer will uncover the full details."

Police continue to search for other suspects involved in the attack and are working to strengthen security around the New Market Police Station.
