A joint team of the Detective Branch (DB) and Chawkbazar police has arrested six individuals in connection with a violent assault on a Department of Environment (DoE) official during an operation at a polythene factory in Dhaka’s Chawkbazar. The arrests were made following a raid in multiple city locations on Monday and Tuesday.

The arrested suspects are Md Humayun Kabir (28), Md Ariful Islam (40), Anwar Hossain Khokon (48), Md Shahabuddin (45), Md Nazmul Alam Ujjal (36), and Md Sumon (26), all named in a case filed by the DoE after the attack.

The incident unfolded on Sunday morning when a mobile court, led by DoE Executive Magistrate Faizunnesa Akter, conducted a raid on a polythene factory located in West Islambagh, Chawkbazar. The operation, supported by the police and the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB), resulted in the seizure of 40 sacks of illegal polythene from a rented property.

As DoE officials attempted to transport the confiscated items in a pickup truck, a mob of 150-200 individuals armed with sticks, bricks, and iron rods ambushed the team. The attackers viciously assaulted Md Shawkat Ali, Director of the DoE’s Monitoring and Enforcement Wing, while also vandalizing the vehicle and seizing the polythene. Shawkat Ali was severely injured and rushed to Dhaka Medical College Hospital for treatment.

Following the attack, Md Motaher Hossain, an inspector at the DoE, filed a case at the Chawkbazar Model Police Station, naming the six arrested individuals and identifying another 150-200 unknown attackers.

In response, the DB and Chawkbazar police swiftly carried out raids, leading to the apprehension of the six suspects. Authorities are continuing to investigate the incident, with legal proceedings underway and efforts ongoing to identify and capture additional individuals involved in the attack.
