A member of a human trafficking ring was arrested by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka. Fabiha Jerin Tamanna was apprehended on Wednesday night while attempting to flee to Nepal, CID officials reported on Thursday.

Jerin, a partner at Dream Home Travels and Tours Ltd, is accused of being an active member of a human trafficking gang that deceived individuals with promises of good jobs in Russia. However, the victims were instead handed over to Russian soldiers, where they faced military training and were coerced into fighting in the war against Ukraine. Those who resisted were subjected to physical and psychological abuse, including food deprivation.

Through investigation, CID officials learned that Humayun Kabir from Singra upazila in Natore district was killed in the conflict, and Aminul from Keraniganj, Dhaka, was severely injured. Akram Hossain, 24, of Palash upazila in Narsingdi, was able to escape the camp and returned to Bangladesh on January 26. He then contacted the families of the other victims, prompting Jhumu Akter, the wife of the injured Aminul, to file a case at Banani Police Station on February 2.

Based on Hossain’s information, CID arrested Jerin. After initial questioning, she confessed to her role in the trafficking operations. CID officials also learned that another group of 10 victims is currently in Saudi Arabia.
