A Dhaka court today convicted and sentenced Evaly’s Chairman Shamima Nasrin and her husband, Managing Director (MD) Mohammad Rassel, to three years in prison in connection with a fraudulent transaction case.

The verdict was delivered by Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md Minhajur Rahman, who also imposed a fine of Taka 5,000 on each of the convicted. Failure to pay the fine would result in an additional six months in prison.

“The court has also issued arrest warrants for the couple as they were absent during the delivery of the judgment,” plaintiff’s lawyer Sakibul Islam told BSS.

The case stems from an incident involving Mujahid Hasan Fahim, the plaintiff, who ordered a bike from Evaly on February 20, 2021, paying the full amount in advance. Despite a promise to deliver the bike within 45 days, the company failed to meet the deadline.

When Fahim visited Evaly's office in Dhanmondi, he was handed a cheque for Taka five lakh as compensation, but was later told not to encash it due to insufficient funds in the company's account.

After numerous attempts to recover his money proved futile, Fahim sent a legal notice to the company. In January 2024, he filed a formal case against Shamima Nasrin and Mohammad Rassel, which ultimately led to today's conviction.

The case highlights ongoing concerns about the accountability of e-commerce platforms and the need for consumer protection in the sector.
