A local leader of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) died at Dhaka Medical College Hospital on Wednesday night, eight days after he was stabbed allegedly by a relative over a land-related dispute in Kaunia upazila of Rangpur.

The deceased was identified as Humayun Ahmed, 25, son of Zohurul Haque of Binodon Majhi village in the upazila. He was the organizing secretary of the JCD’s Tepamadhupur union unit.

According to police and locals, Zohurul had mortgaged a piece of land to his cousin Mohir Uddin, a resident of the same village.

Later, Mohir allegedly remortgaged the land to another party for a higher amount, triggering a dispute.

On July 23, Humayun and his brother Hassenur locked into an altercation with  Mohir over the issue in front of a local school.

At one point, Mohir reportedly stabbed Humayun in the chest with a knife and fled the scene.

Humayun was initially taken to Kaunia Upazila Health Complex and  then shifted to Rangpur Medical College Hospital and later referred to Dhaka Medical College Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries around 11:30 pm on Wednesday, reports UNB.

Victim’s elder brother Hassenur said, “My brother was murdered in a planned attack.”

Kaunia Police Station Officer-in-Charge Abdul Latif Shah said process is underway to file a case over the killing.
