An autorickshaw driver was beaten to death on Friday noon in Bijoynagar upazila of Brahmanbaria district after his vehicle allegedly hit a motorcycle.

The deceased was identified as Mohammad Delwar Hossain, 45, also known as Dilu Mia of Chanpur village in Paharpur union under the same upazila and son of village police officer Tota Mia.

Quoting witnesses, police said Delwar’s auto mistakenly crashed into a motorbike driven by one Billal Mia, a resident of Shantamora village of the upazila, near a confectionery shop in Aulia Bazar on Friday noon, triggering an argument between them over the matter.

At one stage of the altercation, Billal beat Delwar with a bamboo stick leaving him critically injured.

Later, locals rescued him and took to Bijoynagar Upazila Health Complex where doctors declared him dead upon arrival, reports UNB.

Shortly after the incident, the accused fled the scene.

Officer-in-charge Shahidul Islam of Bijoynagar Police Station said the body was sent to the district general hospital for autopsy and a case was filed in this regard.
