Azizur Rahman Musabbir, former general secretary of Dhaka Metropolitan North Swechhasebak Dal, a BNP-affiliated wing, was shot dead by unidentified assailants near Bashundhara City Shopping Complex in Dhaka on the evening of 7 January.
Another man, Abu Sufian, a Jubo Dal activist and general secretary of the Tejgaon Thana Van Workers’ Union, was injured in the attack.
The shooting took place around 8:40 pm behind the complex, near the Tejturi Bazar area in Kazipara-Green Road.
Fazlul Karim, additional deputy commissioner (ADC) of Tejgaon Division of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP), confirmed the incident, saying both men were shot in an alley next to Star Kabab in Karwan Bazar. Musabbir later died at a private hospital in Panthapath from a gunshot wound to his abdomen, while Abu Sufian was first treated at BRB Hospital and later transferred to Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
Police sources said the assailants fired five rounds at Musabbir.
Following the attack, Jubo Dal leaders and activists blocked the Karwan Bazar intersection around 10 pm in protest.
Local resident Rorhul Amin recalled knowing Musabbir from years ago. “I used to live near Bashundhara City in 2007. Musabbir was a young man then. The last time I saw him was in late 2023 before a BNP programme. I always knew him as an activist. Today, he has been shot dead,” he said.
