A Jubo Dal activist was hacked to death and his younger brother injured over an old enmity in Panchbibi upazila of Joypurhat on Thursday night, police said.

The deceased was identified as Yanul Hossain, 31, son of Alam Hossain of Shalaipur village in Panchbibi.

He was an active member of Jatiyatabadi Jubo Dal. His younger brother, Abdul Momin, 22, was also injured in the attack.

The incident took place around 11:00 pm at the Shalaipur Bazar–Dhakarpara road intersection.

According to locals, opponents attacked Yanul and Momin, leaving both of them injured. Yanul was taken to Mahipur Upazila Health Complex, where the on-duty doctor declared him dead. Momin received primary treatment for his injuries.

Golam Rabbani Rabbi, former joint convener of district Jubo Dal, said there is currently no active Jubo Dal committee in Joypurhat, but Yanul had been a long-time active member of the organisation.

Hafiz Md. Raihan, officer-in-charge of Panchbibi Police Station, said police are investigating the motive behind the killing.

The body was sent to the 250-bed General Hospital morgue in Joypurhat for autopsy.

The family has not yet filed any formal complaint. “A case will be lodged if a complaint is received,” the OC added.

Meanwhile, BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Friday expressed concern over the law and order situation in the country ahead of the national elections, saying he is not satisfied with the performance of law enforcement agencies, reports UNB.

“The rate at which political leaders are being killed, particularly some leaders of our party, is truly worrying,” Fakhrul told reporters at his residence in Thakurgaon in the morning.
