A man was shot dead by miscreants while on his way to offer prayers at a mosque in Rajshahi metropolis on Saturday night.

The deceased was identified as Md Mustafa, 50, son of Taimur Uddin of the Danshmari area under Motihar Police Station in the city.

The incident occurred around 8pm on a road adjacent to the wall of Hojapur cemetery.

Officer-in-Charge of Motihar Police Station Abul Kalam Azad, quoting locals, said Mustafa was heading to the mosque to offer prayers when miscreants opened fire on him.

He was shot in the right leg and fell unconscious on the spot.

Locals rescued and rushed him to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital, where the doctor on duty declared him dead on arrival.

Dr Shankar Kumar Biswas, in-charge of the Emergency Department at the hospital, said Mustafa was brought in dead. He had sustained a bullet injury to his right leg and died due to excessive bleeding, reports UNB.

The OC said the motive behind the attack is yet to be known and the assailants remain unidentified. An investigation is underway and legal action will be taken, he added.
