A schoolboy abducted in the capital on Sunday was rescued within an hour after Prime Minister Tarique Rahman personally ordered law enforcement agencies to take immediate action, officials said.

According to the Prime Minister’s Additional Press Secretary Atikur Rahman Rumon, the boy’s father — a Secretariat employee — rushed to the Prime Minister’s Office in distress after learning about the abduction and managed to meet the premier directly.

After hearing the details, the prime minister immediately contacted senior police officials and instructed them to rescue the child without delay.

Police subsequently located the boy in an under-construction building in Khilgaon and freed him within an hour, Rumon said.

The victim, a ninth-grade student of National Laboratory Ideal School, had been abducted around 2:30 pm shortly after leaving school. Police said four to five youths intercepted him and took him to a seven-storey building under construction in the Jorapukur area.

The boy was allegedly assaulted, and the kidnappers later phoned his father demanding Tk 50,000 as ransom, threatening to kill him if the money was not paid.

Following the prime minister’s directive, Deputy Police Commissioner of Ramna Division Masud Alam contacted the abductors using the phone number from which the ransom call had been made and indicated that the money would be delivered.

While the kidnappers attempted to bargain and stall, police traced their location. A raid was then carried out at the building, leading to the boy’s rescue.

Sensing the presence of law enforcement officers, the abductors fled the scene. Police said efforts are underway to identify and arrest those responsible.

The boy was later safely reunited with his family.
