Bangladesh, Netherlands Seek Media Cooperation Amid Digital Challenges

Dutch Ambassador to Bangladesh Joris van Bommel met Information and Broadcasting Minister Zahir Uddin Swapon at his Secretariat office today.



Bangladesh has expressed interest in strengthening cooperation with the Netherlands in the media and communication sector, particularly in addressing challenges emerging from new technologies and the digital landscape.

Information and Broadcasting Minister Zahir Uddin Swapon made the remarks when Dutch Ambassador to Bangladesh Joris van Bommel met him at his Secretariat office on Wednesday.

During the meeting, the minister said the government is working to bring qualitative improvements to its activities and adapt to the rapidly changing information technology environment.

He said the rise of new media, artificial intelligence and digital platforms has created new challenges, including the spread of misinformation and disinformation.

Swapon stressed that ensuring freedom of expression while protecting citizens from harmful misinformation is a key responsibility of the state. He also expressed interest in learning from the Netherlands’ experience in tackling digital challenges and developing effective strategies.

The Dutch ambassador congratulated the minister on assuming office and said the Netherlands has maintained a strong relationship with Bangladesh since independence, with cooperation expanding into areas such as education, health, development, trade and commerce.

Joris van Bommel expressed his country’s willingness to work with the Bangladesh government to further deepen bilateral ties and highlighted the importance of developing a new framework to address digital challenges.

Information and Broadcasting Secretary Mahbuba Farjana and Additional Secretary Md Shah Alam were also present at the meeting.
