India on Friday said Bangladesh's request for the extradition of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina remains under examination, with the process being considered in line with legal requirements and judicial procedures.

"We have received a request for extradition. As we have said earlier, the request is under examination and is being taken into consideration, given the legalities involved and the judicial processes," Indian Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal told reporters at a regular media briefing in New Delhi.

The remarks came a day after Bangladesh's State Minister for Foreign Affairs, Shama Obaid Islam, said India needs to demonstrate political and diplomatic goodwill in responding to Dhaka's request.

She also said Hasina, who is currently in India, would be arrested if she returns to Bangladesh.

"Since she has been convicted, there is no scope for surrender. Whenever she comes to Bangladesh, she will be arrested in accordance with the law," the state minister told reporters at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Bangladesh has formally requested Hasina's extradition under the bilateral extradition treaty and says it is pursuing the matter through diplomatic channels.

Officials said the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Home Affairs and the Ministry of Law have been working on the extradition process since the current government took office in February, continuing efforts initiated by the interim administration.

The government maintains that the extradition process requires time and is committed to pursuing the matter through legal and diplomatic means.

On April 8, Bangladesh renewed its request for the extradition of Sheikh Hasina and former Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal, both of whom were sentenced to death by the International Crimes Tribunal.

Prime Minister's Foreign Affairs Adviser Humaiun Kobir said the government would continue to pursue the extradition through a transparent judicial process.
