China Calls for Unity, Stability in Bangladesh

Chinese Ambassador to Bangladesh Yao Wen on Monday said Bangladesh needs to address challenges including maintaining political unity and social stability, diversifying its industrial base and creating a more favourable external environment as it advances its governance reforms.

Speaking at the 2026 Comparative Governance Forum, jointly organised at the Bangladesh Institute of International and Strategic Studies (BIISS), the envoy said Prime Minister Tarique Rahman's people-centred, pragmatic and efficient leadership had brought a fresh approach to national governance.

Prime Minister's Foreign Affairs Adviser Humaiun Kobir attended the programme as the chief guest, while Fudan University Vice-President Prof Chen Zhimin was present as the special guest. BIISS Director General Major General Ridwanur Rahman also addressed the event.

Yao said Chinese President Xi Jinping has reaffirmed China's commitment to deepening ties with Bangladesh, describing China as a trustworthy friend, neighbour and partner.

He said the understanding reached by the two leaders had laid the foundation for what he described as the "next Golden Fifty Years" of Bangladesh-China relations.

The ambassador noted that both countries had agreed to strengthen high-quality Belt and Road cooperation and better align their development strategies.

He said progress had been made on issues including the comprehensive management of the Teesta River, the modernisation and expansion of Mongla Port and efforts to advance the China-Myanmar-Bangladesh Economic Corridor.

Yao said practical cooperation between the two countries is expanding in both scope and quality, while exchanges on governance have become an important pillar of the Bangladesh-China partnership.

Referring to Prime Minister Tarique Rahman's official visit to China in June, the envoy said the two sides agreed to elevate their comprehensive strategic cooperative partnership and build a Bangladesh-China community with a shared future in the new era.

He described the visit as a milestone in bilateral relations and said both countries had agreed to strengthen exchanges on governance experience.

The training programme includes sessions on China's governance model, national modernisation, the four major global initiatives and the Global South.

Yao encouraged participants to study China's governance experience, adapt relevant lessons to Bangladesh's national context and apply practical policy tools in areas such as poverty reduction, digital governance and public administration to support the country's development.
