Deputy Speaker Barrister Kayser Kamal and Montenegrin Parliament member Gordan Stojovic on Monday discussed strengthening parliamentary ties between Bangladesh and Montenegro, including the formation of a parliamentary friendship group.

During a courtesy meeting at the Deputy Speaker’s office, Stojovic expressed his intention to form a parliamentary friendship group between the two countries to promote mutual relations, parliamentary democracy and the exchange of parliamentary experiences and best practices.

Kayser Kamal welcomed the proposal and expressed Bangladesh’s positive stance towards forming such a group with the Parliament of Montenegro.

The Deputy Speaker said legislatures, as institutions comprising directly elected representatives, play an important role in upholding democratic practices, maintaining a balance of power and strengthening relations between governments and the people.

Stojovic said the Parliament of Montenegro, like Bangladesh’s Parliament, is unicameral and has 81 members.

He said parliamentary committees in Montenegro work closely to scrutinise the overall activities of the executive branch.

Kayser Kamal said political stability is essential for Bangladesh’s socioeconomic development.

He said the opposition should play a constructive role in building a developed nation and that opposition parties should not remain in Parliament merely to oppose the government.

The Deputy Speaker also said Bangladesh had entered a new phase of parliamentary democracy following the July mass uprising. He expressed hope that the new journey would contribute to improving people’s lives and achieving economic freedom.
