Russian Ambassador to Bangladesh Aleksander Mantytsky assured continued Russian support for Bangladesh on Tuesday during a courtesy call on Chief Adviser Professor Dr. Muhammad Yunus at the State Guest House Jamuna in Dhaka.

Ambassador Mantytsky highlighted ongoing cooperation, particularly in the construction of the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant, which is being developed with Russian technical and financial assistance. He also discussed potential expansions in food security, energy exploration, and advancements in science and technology.

Chief Adviser Professor Yunus reminisced about Russia's significant support during Bangladesh's War of Independence, notably its crucial role in mine-clearing operations at Chattogram Port. He urged the Russian envoy to boost imports from Bangladesh beyond the readymade garments, which currently account for about 90% of Dhaka’s exports to Russia. "We need to diversify our exports," Yunus emphasized.

Ambassador Mantytsky acknowledged Russia's role as a key economic partner for Bangladesh, citing the export of essential food grains and fertilizers. Last year, Russia exported over 2.3 million tonnes of wheat to Bangladesh, with this year's shipments surpassing two million tonnes.

He also mentioned Gazprom's interest in exploring additional gas wells in Bhola Island and other inland areas. The construction of the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant is nearing completion and is expected to be operational next year. Russia is also considering the export of LNG to Bangladesh.

Chief Adviser Yunus called for an expansion in economic and educational cooperation and strengthened people-to-people ties between the two nations.
