Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus has expressed profound appreciation for the "benevolent decision" of the President of the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, to pardon 57 Bangladeshi nationals who had been convicted for participating in solidarity demonstrations with the recent student-led mass movements in several Gulf cities.

"We are, indeed, profoundly touched by your empathy and understanding," Prof Yunus wrote in a letter to the UAE President on Tuesday, conveying his deepest gratitude.

In his letter, Prof Yunus reaffirmed Bangladesh's full respect for the laws of the UAE and reiterated the government's commitment to educating its nationals about the local laws and culture of their host countries before their departure from Bangladesh, as noted by the Chief Adviser’s press wing.

"Your magnanimous decision to annul their sentences has brought immense relief and appreciation, particularly among the families of those involved, our broader community in Bangladesh, and the Bangladeshi diaspora in the UAE," Prof Yunus stated.

He emphasized that this act of clemency, following their recent telephone conversation, not only highlights the UAE President's compassionate leadership but also serves to strengthen the enduring bonds of fraternity between the two nations.

"I extend my heartfelt thanks for your gracious decision, which will further solidify the bonds of fraternity and friendship between our nations," Prof Yunus added.

The Chief Adviser expressed his desire to continue strengthening bilateral relations and working together for the mutual benefit of both peoples. He also wished the UAE President good health, happiness, and continued peace, progress, and prosperity for the people of the United Arab Emirates.
