US Secretary of State Antony Blinken expressed strong support for Edmundo Gonzalez Urrutia, a Venezuelan opposition candidate who has fled to Spain and is seeking asylum. In a statement on X, Blinken emphasized that Gonzalez "remains the best hope for democracy" in Venezuela, underscoring the severity of the political crisis in the country.

Blinken highlighted that Gonzalez's departure is a direct consequence of the repressive measures imposed by President Nicolás Maduro. He condemned Maduro's actions as anti-democratic, suggesting that they have forced political figures like Gonzalez to seek safety abroad. The US continues to back Gonzalez's efforts to restore democratic governance in Venezuela amidst ongoing political turmoil and human rights concerns.
