Dhaka and Delhi Discuss Fishermen and Bilateral Ties
Indian High Commissioner to Bangladesh, Pranay Verma, met with Foreign Secretary Md Jashim Uddin
On Sunday, officials from Bangladesh and India engaged in discussions regarding consular access for Indian fishermen detained in Bangladesh last week, as well as the repatriation of Bangladeshi fishermen held by Indian authorities since mid-September.
The talks also addressed the status of Indian workers returning to Bangladesh for ongoing Line of Credit (LoC) projects, alongside issues related to Indian visa operations and the renewal of the Revised Travel Arrangement (RTA).
Indian High Commissioner to Bangladesh, Pranay Verma, met with Foreign Secretary Md Jashim Uddin, emphasizing the need to enhance bilateral relations across various sectors. The meeting, held at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, highlighted the mutual aspirations for peace, security, and development shared by both nations.
When questioned about discussions concerning former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, the Indian envoy noted that the focus was primarily on future cooperation rather than specific political issues.
Both sides reiterated the importance of revitalizing regular bilateral mechanisms, including the Foreign Office Consultations (FOC). The last FOC occurred in New Delhi on November 23 of the previous year. Verma also indicated that the next FOC was a key topic of discussion.
In a previous meeting on October 2 with Foreign Affairs Adviser Md Touhid Hossain, various bilateral matters were reviewed, stressing the necessity for collaboration to strengthen ties.
Recently, both countries have explored avenues for cooperation in trade, development projects, and enhancing people-to-people contacts. The resumption of regular visa processing by the Indian High Commission was also a crucial point of discussion.
