Bangladesh’s Chief Adviser, Professor Dr. Muhammad Yunus, has called on senior Republican Party leaders to visit the country and observe the Interim Government’s efforts to restore democracy. Yunus made the appeal during a meeting with officials from the International Republican Institute (IRI) at the State Guest House Jamuna.

The IRI, a think tank aligned with the Republican Party, promotes democracy globally. Led by Steve Cima, the regional chief, IRI officials are currently meeting with politicians, student groups, and civil society leaders during their visit to Bangladesh.

Cima emphasized that the IRI’s priority is to support the Interim Government’s reform initiatives, particularly in response to widespread calls for overhauling key institutions in the country. “It is in the U.S.'s interest to see these reforms succeed,” Cima stated, referring to the need for changes after years under the Awami League’s rule.

Professor Yunus assured the delegation that his government intends to hold elections once essential reforms are implemented. He added that the process had already begun, with the formation of a new election commission set to lay the groundwork for future elections.

Yunus also expressed Bangladesh's eagerness to work closely with the newly elected Trump administration, emphasizing the importance of fostering stronger ties with the United States. He announced plans to invite top Republican Senators and Congress members to visit Bangladesh and witness the transformative changes brought about by the student-led mass uprising.

The meeting was also attended by IRI officials Geoffrey Macdonald, IRI Country Director Joshua Rosemblum, and Bangladesh Government Senior Secretary Lamiya Morshed.
