Bangladesh's Deputy High Commission in Kolkata, acting mission chief Sikder Mohammad Ashrafur Rahman, has returned to Dhaka and met with Foreign Affairs Adviser Md Touhid Hossain on Thursday for urgent consultations, following escalating tensions with India.

Similarly, Arifur Rahman, the Assistant High Commissioner in Agartala, Tripura, was also recalled, according to a diplomatic source. This move follows a series of recent incidents in both Kolkata and Agartala that have strained bilateral relations.

The tension between the two countries reached a peak on Monday when a Hindu religious group attacked the Bangladesh mission in Agartala. This prompted the Bangladesh Foreign Ministry to summon India's High Commissioner to lodge a formal protest over the attack.

In response to the growing unrest, the Bangladesh authorities suspended all visa and consular services at the Bangladesh Assistant High Commission in Agartala on Tuesday. The government of Bangladesh condemned the attack as "violent" and expressed strong disapproval of the actions of the Hindu Sangharsh Samity, a local group in Agartala, which had carried out the attack on the mission premises.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a statement denouncing the "heinous attack" on Bangladesh’s diplomatic mission, highlighting the desecration of the Bangladeshi national flag. The statement also noted that this incident follows a similar violent protest in Kolkata on November 28, 2024, which has raised concerns about a pattern of hostility toward Bangladesh’s diplomatic presence in India.

Foreign Affairs Adviser Md Touhid Hossain emphasized on Wednesday that while Bangladesh seeks to maintain good relations with India, such incidents were unacceptable and underscored the need for reciprocal respect in diplomatic ties. "We desire strong and cordial relations, but it must be based on mutual respect and understanding," he said in response to questions from the media.
