UK Human Rights Ambassador Eleanor Sanders

UK Human Rights Ambassador Eleanor Sanders arrived in Dhaka on Monday for her inaugural visit, expressing a strong commitment to enhancing collaboration with Bangladesh on key human rights issues, including accountability, justice, media freedom, freedom of religion or belief, gender equality, and labor rights.

Over the course of her three-day visit, Sanders will hold discussions with senior government officials and advisers to address human rights challenges, emphasizing the importance of fundamental freedoms. "We are eager to further our multilateral partnership with Bangladesh, an essential member of the UN Human Rights Council," she remarked.

Ambassador Sanders also highlighted the UK's support for the interim government’s ongoing efforts to drive sustainable reforms grounded in respect for human rights and economic growth. In addition, she will announce new funding from the UK for the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), aimed at strengthening accountability for human rights violations and abuses.

British High Commissioner to Bangladesh, Sarah Cooke, welcomed Sanders’ visit, noting that it underscores the UK’s enduring friendship with Bangladesh and its commitment to promoting a more prosperous and democratic future for its people. "This visit reflects our long-standing dedication to human rights in Bangladesh," she stated.

During her visit, Sanders will engage with civil society, human rights defenders, and minority groups, underscoring the UK's commitment to human rights advocacy. She will also visit the Rohingya refugee camps in Cox’s Bazar to oversee the UK’s protection and response efforts.

As part of her itinerary, Sanders will visit the University of Dhaka, where she will deliver a seminar on human rights. The event will provide an opportunity for students to discuss the vital role of fundamental freedoms, including media freedom, freedom of religion or belief, and the protection of minority groups.

The UK’s longstanding commitment to advancing human rights in Bangladesh and globally continues to guide its diplomatic agenda in the region.
