EU Stands Firm in Support of BD’s Reform Goals: Hadja Lahbib
EU Commissioner for Equality, Preparedness, and Crisis Management, Hadja Lahbib, reaffirmed today that the European Union (EU) is committed to supporting the people of Bangladesh in their reform efforts under the interim government.
“I stand with you, and the European Union stands with you in your pursuit of reform. Human rights and democratic values are the foundation of the EU-Bangladesh relationship,” Lahbib said, delivering her remarks at the launch of the book Bangladesh 36 July 2024 at Bookworm in Justice Shahabuddin Ahmed Park, Gulshan.
The book, published by the EU Mission in Dhaka, captures powerful street art and graffiti that reflect the repression witnessed during the July-August demonstrations, as well as the hopes and aspirations of the Bangladeshi public for a future rooted in democracy and change.
Lahbib emphasized the EU's unwavering commitment to Bangladesh, highlighting the enduring strength of the partnership between the two.
“We are steadfast and reliable partners in humanitarian aid, development, and trade. The Bangladesh-EU partnership is a strategic alliance built on shared values. You can count on my support, and you can count on the support of the European Union,” she affirmed.
The Commissioner also underscored the importance of the artwork in portraying the resilience of the Bangladeshi people and their demand for meaningful change. Lahbib took a moment to reflect on the violent suppression of peaceful protests during the July-August unrest, recalling the harsh crackdown on demonstrators.
“Last year, we all bore witness to the violence against peaceful protesters during the July-August uprising,” Lahbib said.
EU Ambassador to Bangladesh, Michael Miller, delivered the welcome speech at the event, further reinforcing the EU’s dedication to Bangladesh’s progress.
