On Wednesday, Gambia’s Foreign Minister Mamadou Tangara briefed Chief Adviser Prof. Muhammad Yunus about the ongoing genocide case his country has filed against Myanmar, seeking justice for the Rohingya Muslims who have long faced persecution.

"I can assure you that the President of Gambia fully supports this cause and is actively involved in pushing it forward. We are determined to bring this issue back into the international spotlight," Tangara emphasized during his meeting with Chief Adviser Dr. Yunus at the State Guest House Jamuna.

He continued, “The President of Gambia and the Gambian people are unwavering in their commitment to this cause.”

Prof. Yunus expressed deep gratitude for Gambia's continued dedication to the Rohingya people. “We stand with you in your efforts. Your commitment is invaluable to the success of this case, and we hope it leads to meaningful justice,” said the Chief Adviser, according to a statement from his press wing.

Tangara also praised Yunus' leadership, noting that his global stature would significantly bolster the international momentum needed for the cause. "You are a well-respected figure in Gambia, and your efforts will resonate globally," he stated. "The international community will rally behind you."

In a gesture of solidarity, Tangara extended his best wishes to Prof. Yunus in his new role as the head of Bangladesh's Interim Government. “We wish you success in this noble and challenging mission,” Tangara said.

Prof. Yunus acknowledged the importance of Bangladesh’s efforts to mobilize aid for the Rohingya, including calls for humanitarian assistance in Myanmar’s Rakhine State, particularly in providing food, medical aid, and preventing further displacement across the border into Bangladesh.

Both leaders also discussed strengthening bilateral ties, with Prof. Yunus emphasizing the need for deeper trade relations and cooperation between the two countries. “We stand ready to support you in any way we can,” he offered.

The conversation also touched on the potential of microcredit to combat poverty in Africa, with both leaders agreeing on its role in fostering peace and stability, particularly in conflict-ridden regions.

Dr. Khalilur Rahman, the Chief Adviser’s High Representative for Rohingya Affairs, and Lamiya Morshed, senior secretary for SDG affairs in Bangladesh, were also present at the meeting.
