Foreign Affairs Adviser Md Touhid Hossain, during a meeting with US Senator Gary C. Peters on Tuesday, raised concerns about misinformation and disinformation being spread about Bangladesh both domestically and internationally. He urged the Senator to accurately reflect the true situation of the country to counter these false narratives.

The Senator acknowledged the issue, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The meeting took place at the State Guest House ‘Padma,’ with US Chargé d'Affaires Tracey Ann Jacobson also in attendance, along with a delegation of US officials and senior diplomats from the US Embassy in Dhaka.

Discussions during the meeting covered key areas of bilateral relations, including trade, investment, development cooperation, people-to-people ties, cybersecurity, and climate resilience. The Foreign Adviser expressed appreciation for Senator Peters’ first visit to Bangladesh and updated him on the government’s reform initiatives led by Dr. Yunus, as well as preparations for holding a "free, fair, and participatory" election.

Senator Peters expressed support for Bangladesh’s ongoing efforts and emphasized the importance of continued US assistance in the country's democratic transition.

The two sides also discussed the challenges Bangladesh faces in hosting the Rohingya refugees, with the Foreign Adviser stressing the urgent need for their sustainable repatriation to Myanmar. He called for US cooperation at the international conference on the Rohingya crisis, scheduled to be held in New York later this year.

Senator Peters praised Bangladesh’s humanitarian efforts and reassured the Foreign Adviser of US support for the repatriation process. He also highlighted the significant contributions of the Bangladeshi community in Michigan and across the US and stressed the need for enhanced collaboration on shared issues like climate change.

The meeting concluded with a commitment to strengthening the Bangladesh-US partnership and exploring new avenues for cooperation. Senator Peters conveyed his appreciation for Bangladesh’s hospitality and reaffirmed the United States' support in advancing mutual interests.

The meeting was followed by an iftar and dinner.
