Myanmar Confirms 180,000 Rohingyas Eligible for Return
Myanmar has informed Bangladesh that, from a list of 800,000 Rohingyas currently sheltered in Bangladesh, they have identified 180,000 individuals eligible for repatriation to Myanmar.
The original list, provided by Bangladesh in six batches between 2018 and 2020, forms the basis of this verification process.
An additional 70,000 Rohingyas are still under review, with further scrutiny required on their photographs and names before they can be confirmed for return.
This development was shared with Dr. Khalilur Rahman, the High Representative to the Chief Adviser of Bangladesh, by U Than Shew, Myanmar's Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, during a meeting on the sidelines of the sixth BIMSTEC Summit in Bangkok on Thursday.
This marks the first confirmed list of eligible returnees and represents a significant step toward resolving the long-standing Rohingya crisis.
Myanmar authorities also assured that the verification process for the remaining 550,000 Rohingyas from the original list will proceed swiftly.
During the meeting, Dr. Rahman extended Bangladesh’s condolences for the recent earthquake victims in Myanmar and reaffirmed the country's readiness to provide additional humanitarian aid to the disaster-affected regions.
