Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni is expected to pay an official visit to Bangladesh in the last week of August, as both countries seek to deepen cooperation in key areas and strengthen bilateral relations.

Officials from both sides are currently finalising arrangements to ensure the visit’s success, a diplomatic source revealed.

Earlier this month, Italian Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi visited Bangladesh and assured Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus that Italy intends to expand employment opportunities for Bangladeshis while implementing measures to guarantee safe migration.

Matteo conveyed that Prime Minister Meloni aims to visit Bangladesh before September, underscoring Rome’s eagerness to ‘renew’ and ‘re-launch’ bilateral cooperation with Dhaka.

Chief Adviser Yunus highlighted Bangladesh’s commitment to collaborating with Italy to combat illegal migration and human trafficking.

“Bangladeshis living in Italy are very grateful to the host country and appreciative of how they are treated,” Prof Yunus remarked.

During the margins of the high-level segment of the 79th United Nations General Assembly last September, PM Meloni met with Chief Adviser Yunus.

In that meeting, Meloni expressed Italy’s support for Bangladesh’s reform initiatives aimed at improving social and economic conditions for its people.

The discussion also focused on migration, with both sides expressing their intent to strengthen cooperation by resuming negotiations on a bilateral agreement to combat irregular migration, enhance return processes, and simultaneously support legal migration pathways.
