Bangladesh has pledged full cooperation with Malaysian authorities in their ongoing investigation involving 36 Bangladeshi nationals detained over suspected links to a militant network, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA) announced on Saturday.
According to the ministry, the Bangladesh High Commission in Kuala Lumpur is in regular contact with Malaysian officials and has formally requested the identities of those arrested, as well as details of the allegations made against them.
"The government of Bangladesh is closely monitoring the situation," the ministry said in a statement, adding that the High Commission will continue to provide all necessary consular support to the affected individuals and their families.
The arrests were first revealed on 27 June by Malaysian Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail, who stated that the group was allegedly linked to extremist activities and was under investigation for possible fundraising and recruitment for overseas militant organisations.
Following the announcement, the Bangladesh High Commission swiftly engaged with Malaysian authorities, seeking more information on the nature of the charges and legal proceedings.
The foreign ministry confirmed that five of the 36 individuals have already been charged in Malaysian courts, while the rest remain under investigation. Some of them may be deported, pending further legal review.
Reaffirming its zero-tolerance policy, the ministry said, “Bangladesh once again reiterates its firm stance against all forms of terrorism, violent extremism, and militancy. The government is ready to fully cooperate with Malaysia in this matter.”
Speaking to reporters on Thursday, Foreign Affairs Adviser Md Touhid Hossain also confirmed that Dhaka had formally requested detailed information. “We will verify the allegations through proper channels,” he said.
“If any individual is proven to be involved in militancy, Bangladesh will take appropriate legal action. Our commitment to counterterrorism remains unwavering,” he added.
Authorities say they are closely tracking developments and are prepared to work with international partners to prevent the misuse of Bangladeshi labour migration routes by extremist groups.
