US envoy Steve Witkoff arrived in Moscow on Wednesday, according to Russian state media, ahead of high-level talks with Russian leadership as tensions rise over the war in Ukraine.

His visit comes just days before a deadline set by President Donald Trump to impose new sanctions on Russia if progress is not made toward ending hostilities.

"Steven Witkoff was met by Presidential Special Representative Kirill Dmitriev," reported Russian state news agency TASS, signaling that formal discussions are imminent.

Witkoff’s visit is seen as a last-minute diplomatic push to de-escalate the conflict, which has drawn international condemnation and led to multiple rounds of Western sanctions since 2022.
