South Korea and Bangladesh have begun negotiations on a comprehensive economic partnership agreement (CEPA), Seoul's industry ministry said on Monday, as South Korea looks to strengthen its presence in South Asia amid global trade uncertainties.

The first round of talks is being held in Seoul and will run until Wednesday, the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy said, according to the Korea Times.

Bangladesh, the world's eighth most populous country, has recorded an average of 6.6% economic growth over the past three years, the ministry added.

"Signing a CEPA with Bangladesh will serve as a bridgehead for Korean companies to enter the Southwest Asian market, which holds great potential," said Kwon Hye-jin, director general for FTA negotiations at the ministry.
