Germany Reaffirms Strong Support for Bangladesh’s Growth

Germany has reaffirmed its steadfast commitment to Bangladesh’s development priorities and humanitarian efforts.

German State Secretary for Economic Cooperation and Development Johann Saathoff made the assurance during his two-day visit to Dhaka, which concluded on Tuesday (October 28).

Accompanied by German Ambassador Dr. Rüdiger Lotz and a high-level delegation, Saathoff’s visit underscored Berlin’s growing partnership with Dhaka in the fields of sustainable development, economic growth, and humanitarian assistance.

During his stay, Saathoff held meetings with senior government officials, including Economic Relations Division (ERD) Secretary Md. Shahriar Kader Siddiky, as well as representatives from the United Nations, international partners, and civil society. Discussions focused on strengthening bilateral cooperation in climate and energy, good governance, and sustainable economic transformation.

Saathoff and Ambassador Lotz also travelled to Cox’s Bazar, where they met with representatives of UNICEF and local partners to review ongoing initiatives supporting Rohingya refugees and host communities.

The visit highlighted Germany’s enduring solidarity with Bangladesh in tackling complex development and humanitarian challenges.

“Germany remains firmly committed to supporting Bangladesh and the international community in finding durable solutions for the Rohingya,” Saathoff said.

“The Rohingya people deserve the opportunity to return home voluntarily, safely, and with dignity — but lasting peace and stability in Myanmar are essential for that to happen. Until then, we will continue to stand by Bangladesh and all those working to assist both refugees and host communities.”

Germany is among Bangladesh’s key development partners, with cooperation focused on sustainable economic transformation, climate resilience, and social inclusion.

The latest visit further strengthened the longstanding partnership, built on shared values, mutual respect, and a joint commitment to sustainable progress and humanitarian responsibility.
