EU Calls for Constructive Dialogue on Bangladesh Transition

The European Union (EU) has urged all political parties in Bangladesh to engage constructively in the next steps of the country’s democratic transition.

The statement came hours after Chief Adviser Prof Muhammad Yunus delivered a national address, outlining state reform and election plans.

“The EU supports the transition in Bangladesh under the interim government leading to democratic elections,” the bloc said.

Yunus announced a referendum on state reform implementation and general elections to be held on the same day in early February. He also outlined plans for a Constitution Reform Council after the elections and the formation of an upper house based on a proportionate representation system.

While Jamaat-e-Islami opposed holding two votes on the same day over concerns of rigging and violence, BNP rejected other proposals, calling them beyond political consensus.

“We encourage the political parties to engage constructively in the next steps,” the EU added. “We welcome Chief Adviser Yunus’s leadership toward participatory, free, and fair elections in February next year.”
