Bangladesh has urged various quarters in India to refrain from spreading misleading narratives that undermine the spirit of good-neighbourly relations and mutual trust between the two countries.
Responding to recent comments by the spokesperson of India’s Ministry of External Affairs regarding the situation of minority communities in Bangladesh, the spokesperson of Bangladesh’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, SM Mahbubul Alam, said the remarks did not reflect the facts on the ground.
He said Bangladesh firmly rejects any inaccurate, exaggerated or motivated narratives that misrepresent the country’s longstanding tradition of communal harmony.
“With much regret, we observe systematic attempts to portray isolated criminal incidents as evidence of persecution of Hindus, which are then maliciously used to spread anti-Bangladesh sentiment in different parts of India,” the spokesperson said while outlining Bangladesh’s position.
He added that certain quarters have shown selective and unfair bias by amplifying and misrepresenting individual incidents to provoke hostility among the Indian public against Bangladesh, its diplomatic missions and other establishments in India.
Addressing a specific case cited by the Indian side, the spokesperson said the individual involved was a listed criminal whose death occurred during an act of extortion carried out with a Muslim accomplice, who was later arrested.
“Presenting such a criminal incident through the lens of minority treatment is not factual and is deeply misleading,” he said, reiterating Bangladesh’s commitment to communal harmony and rule of law.
