India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar on Tuesday handed over a condolence letter from Prime Minister Narendra Modi to BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman, expressing deep respect for the late Begum Khaleda Zia.

The letter was delivered during an exchange of greetings at the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban this afternoon. The message conveyed New Delhi’s profound sorrow at the passing of the former prime minister and paid tribute to Khaleda Zia’s role as a steadfast figure in Bangladesh’s democratic journey.

Dr Jaishankar arrived in Dhaka earlier in the day to attend Khaleda Zia’s state funeral, joining representatives from several countries who have come to pay their last respects to the three-time former prime minister.

Earlier, foreign ministers from Nepal, Bhutan and Sri Lanka, as well as the Speaker of Pakistan’s National Assembly, arrived in Dhaka to attend the funeral, reflecting regional respect for Khaleda Zia’s leadership and legacy.

The namaz-e-janaza of BNP Chairperson and former prime minister Begum Khaleda Zia is scheduled to be held at the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban premises around 2:00pm today.

Since early morning, thousands of mourners have gathered at Manik Mia Avenue to pay their final tributes to the late leader.
