Met Office Issues Urgent Lightning Alert for 21 Districts

The Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) has issued an urgent lightning alert for 21 districts, warning of thunderstorms with gusty to squally winds likely to hit in the next few hours.


According to a bulletin from the Met Office, rain or thundershowers accompanied by lightning and temporary west or northwesterly winds at speeds of 45–60 km/h—or higher in some areas—are likely to affect the following districts between 8:30 AM and 12:30 PM on Monday:
Rajshahi, Natore, Pabna, Sirajganj, Tangail, Manikganj, Dhaka, Narsingdi, Rangpur, Gaibandha, Sherpur, Netrokona, Mymensingh, Sunamganj, Kishoreganj, Brahmanbaria, Moulvibazar, Habiganj, Sylhet, Rangamati, and Bandarban.

In light of the forecast, the Met Office has advised the public to take the following precautions to stay safe during lightning events:

1. Stay indoors and avoid travel if possible

2. Keep windows and doors closed

3. Avoid taking shelter under trees

4. Unplug electrical and electronic devices

5. Do not lie on concrete floors or lean against concrete walls

6. Stay away from water bodies and metal objects

7. Do not go outside during hailstorms

Additionally, Dhaka’s air quality was reported to be “unhealthy for sensitive groups” on Monday morning.
