Landslide Kills 21, Dozens Missing in Western Kenya

At least 21 people have been killed and 30 others remain missing after a massive landslide struck Kenya’s western Rift Valley region on Saturday, following days of torrential rain during the country’s short rains season.

The disaster hit the hilly area of Chesongoch in Elgeyo Marakwet County, destroying over 1,000 homes and blocking several key roads.

Authorities said 30 people with severe injuries were airlifted to a hospital in Eldoret City for treatment.

Local resident Stephen Kittony said he heard a loud rumble before fleeing with his children, each running in different directions to escape the disaster.

Rescue teams continued operations throughout Saturday despite heavy rainfall, searching through thick mud and debris for survivors.

Chesongoch, known for its steep terrain, has faced similar tragedies in the past. Deadly landslides in 2010 and 2012 claimed dozens of lives, while floods in 2020 swept away a local shopping centre.

Interior Minister Kipchumba Murkomen said the government is working to relocate affected families to safer areas.
