Bangladesh's measles outbreak continues to worsen, with 17 more children dying within the last 24 hours, pushing the total number of deaths linked to measles and measles-like syndrome to 545, according to the latest figures released by the health authorities.
Data showed that the deaths were recorded between 8:00am on Saturday and 8:00am on Sunday, highlighting the continued pressure on the country's healthcare system as new infections rise across different regions.
During the same 24-hour period, another 1,127 patients showing measles-like symptoms were admitted to hospitals nationwide.
Among the newly admitted patients, laboratory tests confirmed 97 measles infections.
So far this year, health records show that at least 87 children have died from confirmed measles infections. In addition, 458 other deaths were reported among children who had symptoms consistent with measles, although not all cases were laboratory confirmed.
Official data also indicated that between 15 March and 25 May, a total of 8,719 cases were confirmed through laboratory testing.
The overall number of suspected measles cases reported across the country has now reached 64,940.
Despite the rising caseload, health authorities said a large number of patients have recovered, with 47,619 individuals already discharged from hospitals after receiving treatment.
Public health experts have continued to stress the importance of vaccination, early detection and timely medical care to reduce the risk of severe complications, particularly among children.
