Madrasah student's death sparks protest in Gazipur

Students of a madrasha blocked Dhaka-Mymensingh Highway on Sunday protesting the death of a fellow in Gazipura of Tongi area of the city.


Yeasin Ali, 17, a class IX student of Tamirul Millat Kamil Madrasah and son of Ripon Mia of Sujanagar upazila in Pabna district, died on the spot when a covered van knocked him down while he was crossing a road on Saturday evening.

Yeasin along with his parents used to live in Gazipur, Kazipara area of the city.

Later, the students of the madrasah staged demonstrations at Gazipur Bus Stand area and the main gate of the madrasah by blocking roads around 11am.

Vehicular movement on the busy highway remained suspended following the protest, causing immense sufferings to the commuters.

Mehedi Hasan, Officer-in-Charge of Tongi East Police Station, said police were working to try and bring the situation under control, reports UNB.
