Workers block road i Kalapara demanding inclusion in Payra power plant unloading work on Tuesday.
Patuakhali: Members of the Patuakhali Naujan Sramik Union have blocked roads, held sit-in and protest marches demanding inclusion of registered workers in the loading and unloading activities of ships at the Payra 1320 MW Thermal Power Plant in Kalapara, Patuakhali.
On Tuesday, at around 11:30 am, the workers started the sit-in by blocking the Londa-Morichbunia road with a protest march in front of the main gate of the power plant's jetty. After staying there until 3 pm, the workers temporarily suspended the movement with the mediation of Kalapara Police Station.
Patuakhali Naujan Sramik President Kabir Hossain Bepari, Secretary Shahajaman and Organizing Secretary Rabiul Awal Antar, along with leaders and activists of the organization, spoke at the sit-in.
The speakers said that for a long time, a syndicate has been operating the loading and unloading of ships without including the registered workers of the district in the work. This program has been carried out despite repeated requests for the inclusion of registered workers, but they have not been accepted. The speakers warned of more stringent programs if the fair demands of the workers are not met. - Gofran Palash
