Flood situation worsens in Sunamganj

Due to heavy rain and onrush of hilly water, flood situation has worsened in Sunamganj.



Due to heavy rain and onrush of hilly water, flood situation has worsened in Sunamganj. Flood water has inundated many new areas of the district, rendering thousands of people marooned.
The Surma river was flowing 50cm above the danger level around 9.00am on Thursday. The water level of the river can increase due to heavy rain in Meghalaya and Cherapujni of India.
Water level of all the major rivers in the district including Kushiara, Jadukata and Rokti are rising significantly.
Many roads of Bishwamvarpur and Tahirpur upazilas have been submerged by floodwater. Road communications of two upazilas have been disconnected with the district headquarters.
The Chhatak-Gobindaganj road has been submerged, disconnecting the road communications with the country’s other parts.
Executive Engineer of Sunamganj Water Development Board (WDB) Md Samsuddoha said the district saw an average of 181 millimetre rainfall in the last 24 hours. Heavy rainfall may occur in India’s Meghalaya in next 24 hours which can worsen the flood situation.  The Surma river was flowing 50cm above the danger level around 9.00am on Thursday.
