A clash between two groups in Magura’s Sreepur upazila on Tuesday night left one person dead and several others injured.

The victim was identified as Rashedul Islam, 55, son of Kawsar Mollah of Hogoldanga village. He was a member of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB).

However, the identities of the injured are yet to be ascertained.

Shukdev Roy, officer-in-charge of Sreepur police station, said supporters of Hannan Mollah and Paban Mollah of Kajli village had long been at loggerheads over voting for a UP member candidate in the last elections.

As a sequel to their long rivalry, followers of Paban Mollah attacked members of Hannan Mollah's group with sharp weapons around 8.30pm, leaving them injured.

They were rushed to Magura Sadar Hospital where doctors declared Rashedul dead on arrival.

On information, police recovered the body and sent it to the hospital morgue for an autopsy.

A case was filed with Sreepur police, said the OC, adding that additional police forces have been deployed in the area to avert further trouble.
