The deceased were identified as Ali Ahmad, 23, and Alamgir Hossain Alam, 19. The wounded victims have been hospitalized for treatment.
The violence erupted after escalating tensions the previous night, when both factions used mosque loudspeakers to announce their intentions for a confrontation. The clash began at around 8 am in a remote char area under Bashbaria union, with both sides armed with firearms and homemade weapons.
Upazila Nirbahi Officer Md Masud Rana explained that the confrontation was the result of a long-standing rivalry between current union parishad chairman Jakir Hossain Ratul and former chairman Ashraful Islam. During the clash, two supporters of Jakir were killed, while one supporter of Ashraful lost his life.
“The groups are currently moving toward Mirzachar,” said the UNO.
Raipura Police Station’s officer-in-charge, Adil Mahmud, confirmed that police were en route to the scene, which is located far from the station. As of 1 pm, reports indicated that the conflict was ongoing.
